Description awarded to all personnel who took part in operations in the South Atlantic for the liberation of  South Georgia and the Falklands Islands. To qualify the recipient had to have at least one day service in the Falklands or 30 days in the operation zone.Those who qualified under the first condition were additionally awarded a rosette.
Medal description obverse crowned profile of the Queen Elizabeth 11; Reverse laurel wreath below the arms of the Falklands Islands with SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL inscribed round the top. Ribbon Water silk blue , white and blue.
